...in-game, the year is about 4,000 AD. Only three remaining super powers remain, each competing for the scant resources left on the planet after dozens of nuclear wars have rendered vast swaths of the world uninhabitable wastelands. The polar ice caps have melted 20 times due to nuclear wars and all of the big cities have crumbled. Roughly 90% of the worlds population (at its peak 2000 years ago) has died either from nuclear annihilation or famine caused by the global warming that has left absolutely zero arable land to farm "I was forced to do away with democracy roughly a thousand years ago because it was endangering my empire. But of course the people hate me now and every few years since then, there are massive guerrilla uprisings in the heart of my empire that I have to deal with which saps resources from the war effort." The military stalemate is so tight and balanced that no other action is possible except the construction of more tanks. This also me...

a real-life galleon in manila

Image
As part of the Día del GaleónFestival, the Philippines will play host to the replica of the 17th Century galleon Andalucia on October 6–9, 2010, at Pier 13 in Manila. The 51-meter-long traveling museum created by Spain’s Nao Victoria Foundation makes use of ancient seafaring techniques with very minimal modern technology and virtually no fuel at its disposal. At the pier, guests will be treated to festive music provided by school bands. There will also be a waiting area where guests can view an exhibit on the Galleon Trade and participate in creating mural paintings of their impressions. There will also be a creative trade fair selling indigenous arts and crafts. For booking or any other concerns regarding the galleon, please e-mail diadelgaleon@yahoo.com. The tour is free. Groups of 30 pax and above however will have to register in advance while individual guests need not reserve. No children below 8 years old, and those below 12 must be accompanied by a chaperone. it's 2010. here's your jetpack.

Image
the martin jetpack is the first commercially available jetpack. get yours now for $86,000. from the FAQ: What happens if the engine stops? The Martin Jetpack is equipped with a 'Ballistic Parachute'. If something untoward happens the pilot pulls a toggle and a small propellant (similar to one used in a car airbag) is fired rapidly deploying a parachute. The pilot, Jetpack and parachute descend as one. Are we all going to be flying to work on these? Some people will use these for work; most of us will not be able to do this for some time. The main use for Jetpacks will initially be recreational. This is similar to current ATV, snowmobile, jet ski, and ultralight use. Are there any restrictions on who can fly one? Currently the pilot must weigh over 140 lbs and under 240 lbs. there. now whenever someone notices my weight, i'll just say i'm bulking up for my jetpack.

the teenager audio test

Image
Clicking the play button below will produce a tone that is generally only heard by people under the age of 25. It has been used as a deterrent device to keep teenagers from loitering in malls and shops, and sounds similar to a buzzing mosquito. The elderly and people with hearing damage often cannot hear the sound. i am over 25 but my ears don't feel like they are. still, i failed this 'test'. can any young 'uns reading this blog confirm whether clicking the button actually produces any sound? i feel like i've been had. the man behind macgyver

Image
lifehacker recently did an interview with lee david zlotoff, creator of everyone's favorite blonde mulleted jack-of-all trades action hero (and personal hero of mine), macgyver. highlights follow. on his source of inspiration for the macgyver character: Zlotoff: Yeah, I would say ... My dad was sort of the model for MacGyver. He was, by profession, a New York City junior high shop teacher. But he could fix anything, build anything, he was kind of an amateur architect ... plumbing, electrical, wood, metal. You name it, he could do it. on the numerous macgyver parodies that have sprung up over time: Zlotoff: Well, The Simpsons jumped all over MacGyver, which, bless 'em (laughs). The two aunts were rabid MacGyver fans. I think they even did an episode where they kidnapped Richard Dean Anderson, and I think he actually did the voice in the episode, which was pretty fun. You know, until they decided they could turn around and make a movie out of it, I thought the MacGruber skits w...
