mataas na paaralan ng lamanglupa

Image
right click on image --> open link in new tab to enlarge character sketches for a story idea about a bunch of tweenage mythological creatures going to a magical high school that is nothing like hogwarts. this is waaay down the line, with so many issues of school run still to go (i pretty much have the entire plot for school run all finished in my head, just need to set it down on the page). i just wanted to call dibs on the concept, and a few specific ideas. still deciding on a working title... "lamanglupa high" "aswang academy" "my PE teacher is a tikbalang"

cliff chiang's justice league of japan!

Image
i love cliff chiang's wonder woman, i think it doesn't get nearly enough praise for saving her look after those jim lee/tv pilot travesties. BUT this post is about chiang's old-school anime-inspired JLA re-designs, which, according to chris arrant , were almost greenlit by DC years ago. oh, what could have been. BTW, chiang also did this awesome all-DC, all-girl rock band pinup. gods, but i love a good fictional character rock band pinup.

jp cuison: toys and vids

Image
jp cuison, also known as one half of punnx comics, shows off his toy-customizing chops for jomike tejido's line of DIY designer toys, robotars : the above character, "bugi kulangot", was taken from the following video, also by mr. cuison: and further browsing of their youtube channel unearthed this gem of a 60's marvel cartoon parody, the capt. bgy. captain series. art look familiar? the pencils were done by manix abrera.

superman, from scratch

Image
You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called SUPERMAN. It is issue 1 of this book. You have been told that Superman is a man who dresses predominantly in a shade of blue, and wears a red S symbol. You know nothing else about the character. The cover must include a logo and the text THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE DARING EXPLOITS OF THE ONE AND ONLY SUPERMAN. And that's it. warren ellis posted the above challenge on his whitechapel forum several days ago, and here a few of the results: i am totally digging stonehenge superman. complete thread here . via

project rooftop honorable mention!

Image
several months ago i joined project rooftop's wolverine costume redesign contest, and sent in this clean-shaven, understated, "comfy" rendition of the berserker x-man: well, the judges liked it enough to give it an honorable mention on the project rooftop blog! THANK YOU PROJECT ROOFTOP! in their own (edited) words: Dean: 7. Ditch the glasses and add some more stubble, and I’m sold. Chris: 6. A very professorial Logan here — one still seemingly able for battle, but a more studied and measured approach to Wolverine. Vito: 5. Those glasses are very left field and out of character. Joel: 5. What’s strapped to his thigh? A gun? What does he keep in those little Liefeld-sized pouches that are strapped over his jacket? Could we lose those? Ron: 4–looks like it’d be John Lennon’s interpretation of a Halloween Wolvie costume. mmm, liefeld pouches... they're onto me. :P check out the rest of the cum laudes here , the winners are here , and my own personal picks are below (clic...

more about that shirt

Image
i don't know what i was thinking when i bought shirts in four colors. now i don't know what to do with 'em. so here's the deal: if you can make a color scheme i like better than the ones above, i'll give you a free shirt in your color scheme. in other news, here's the self-defeating headline of the day . also, would you die if someone flushes you down the tiolet? not necessarily .

featured on spicywebdesigners.com... sorta

Image
i work as a freelance character designer with the folks at tisme.com.au , and they were recently featured on spicywebdesigners.com . i got to answer one interview question: 7. What kind of projects do you work on for clients and how did you earn the title of “mascot illustrator”? Answered by FERDINAND, a mascot illustrator at Tisme.com.au: Basically I get called in when the client wants to project a specific personality, image or message through a character design. Mascots work in a similar fashion to any logo in that they represent the company and its ideals, but mascot designs can also give the consumer some things logos can’t; a face, a look, a human touch. We respond instinctively to eye contact and body language, and that’s the area of expertise for a mascot designer – to try to get the audience to relate to a brand on that intimate, personal level. full article here .
