so i'll be taking part in the 24-hour comic book event tomorrow, where a bunch of us komiks types will attempt to write and draw 24 pages of comics in 24 hours. familiar names will include: Kajo Baldisimo Michael David Mel Casipit Josel Nicolas Freely Abrigo Mary Ranises Kevin Justin Ang Ammathorn the pinoy komiks jack bauer gets a cash prize and his/her work published by espresso comics . the works judged as having the Best Story and Best Art will also be awarded cash. and i guess these will be consolation prizes: i will be liveblogging throughout the whole thing, and uploading the pages as they are completed to the official website . after the 24-hour period, contestants will be given five days to pimp promote our works, and the ten most-viewed entries make it to the shortlist. so i'll need your eyeballs , people. the philippine 24-hour comic book challenge begins tomorrow at 9am!

the comics cover remix contest for this year's summer komikon sounded like fun, so i sent in an entry. i'm not allowed to post it yet, but here's the original i based it on:

several months ago i joined project rooftop's wolverine costume redesign contest, and sent in this clean-shaven, understated, "comfy" rendition of the berserker x-man: well, the judges liked it enough to give it an honorable mention on the project rooftop blog! i don't know what i was thinking when i bought shirts in four colors. now i don't know what to do with 'em. so here's the deal: if you can make a color scheme i like better than the ones above, i'll give you a free shirt in your color scheme. in other news, here's the self-defeating headline of the day . also, would you die if someone flushes you down the tiolet? not necessarily .

the moleskine notebook i won arrived today via overnight delivery--thoughtfully wrapped in several layers of heavy magazine paper: it's a reporter-style plain notebook, with the binding along one short side. but if i lay it down "landscape" instead of "portrait", it looks just like my traditional sketchbook, only smaller. and about twenty times more expensive. speaking of class, this little note on the front page gave me a laugh: moleskine's target market is apparently so rich it offers cash rewards for the return of misplaced notebooks. in dollars. the notebook came with a manual. really. moleskine--it's the YC bikini brief of notebooks. jokes aside though, thanks to mr. jasper ong of avalon.ph and djong of down a notch. i'd also like to express my gratitude to the "atmoshperic noise" at random.org for spewing out my name after being fed the list of finalists. if you'd like to try your luck, there are two more moleskine contests...

sweet revenge is when the contest holder, who had earlier declared as winner a work that plagiarized your own work , contacts you and asks you to do the rest of the illustrations. oh no no, sweet revenge is gloating about it. bwa ha ha ha

so he said he wanted: A hamster in an army helmet, firing an assault rifle. The helmet can be any type of modern infantry head protection. The beast itself must be a brutal Golden Hamster, none of those puny Russian dwarf things please. The rifle must be either an SA80 , M4 Carbine or an Avtomat Kalashnikova Forty Seven -whichever you prefer. i thought hamsters and AK-47's just seem to naturally go together, and so...

i'm sure this happens a lot in online design contests, but it sure sucks to have it happen to me. so the contest is here . it's for a graphic to be used for wedding materials. my entry: and here's the last-minute winning entry, submitted about a week after mine. notice the tree : side-by-side: i contacted the copycat (aka eventual winner) and called her out on her plagiarism. at first she said we must have used the same reference material but i drew my tree from scratch ! she never replied after i told her that. i also asked the contest holder to have the winner redraw her damned tree.
