project rooftop honorable mention!

several months ago i joined project rooftop's wolverine costume redesign contest, and sent in this clean-shaven, understated, "comfy" rendition of the berserker x-man:

well, the judges liked it enough to give it an honorable mention on the project rooftop blog! THANK YOU PROJECT ROOFTOP!

Dean: 7. Ditch the glasses and add some more stubble, and I’m sold.

Chris: 6. A very professorial Logan here — one still seemingly able for battle, but a more studied and measured approach to Wolverine.

Vito: 5. Those glasses are very left field and out of character.

Joel: 5. What’s strapped to his thigh? A gun? What does he keep in those little Liefeld-sized pouches that are strapped over his jacket? Could we lose those?

belated october komikon '09 post

ito yung indie tiangge table nung komikon. haba, no?




ang saya nitong pinakahuling komikon. bagamat sariwa pa ang alaala ni ondoy, marami paring dumalo at nagpamalas ng kanilang pagmamahal sa komiks. hitik din sa mga bigating comics release: el indio, 100 years of philippine komiks and cartoons, trese vol.3, where bold stars go to die, elmer collected edition, 12, underpass... whew! parang kabute ang mga "instant classic" nitong komikon. i've never seen anything like it.

doon naman sa aming sulok ng indie tiangge, marami akong nakilala at nakausap na mambabasa ng ang maskot at operasyon, at yung iba'y nagpakuha pa ng litrato. it was truly awesome meeting all you guys en gels. kwentuhan ulit tayo sa susunod.


talagang namigay ako ng mga tshirt, ha? eto'ng katibayan. sensya na sa mga naubusan.

neil gaiman and twitter: testing the limits of collaboration in fiction


here's the concept: neil gaiman writes one sentence, and a bunch of people continue the rest of the story via twitter, 140 characters at a time. the result, according to slate.com, is rather a mess:

...Gaiman's kickoff sentence for the the BBCAA story is, "Sam was brushing her hair when the girl in the mirror put down the hairbrush, smiled & said, 'We don't love you anymore.'" What follows, coaxed out of the Twitterverse, is a patchwork of extremely familiar motifs: malicious animated puppets, cuddly talking animal pals, an ominous castle, a sinister music box and spookily chanted rhymes -- all tied to the obligatory chase after objects of obscure magical importance (otherwise known as plot coupons).

Here's how it worked: Although anyone could tweet a suggested next sentence, an editor at BBCAA selected which ones would be incorporated into the canonical version of the story. (Gaiman's involvement in the creative phase of the operation seems minimal, which didn't keep one participant from grandiosely claiming to be "writing an audiobook with Neil Gaiman" elsewhere on the Web.) Oddly enough, no one was bothered by this "gatekeeping" role. Anyone who took a good look at the chaotic selection of potential paths forward could see that somebody had to steer. Yet, even with a skipper, much of the time the tale didn't seem to be sailing anywhere but in circles.

my shirts are crap, but they're free :)

i finally went to pick up the "ang maskot" shirts from the printers... and they're a bit of a disaster:

this is what the original designs looked like. as you can see THEY FORGOT THE WHITE LAYER AND THE BORDER AROUND THE IMAGES. and print quality wasn't so hot either.

the white shirt isn't so bad:


the red one is pretty much useless.


the blue one is somewhere in the middle.


i seriously think it would be unethical to charge money for these shirts, so i'll be giving them away instead, first come first served. you can call dibs by commenting on this post. the rest will be given away to buena mano customers at this sunday's komikon at megamall.

must just be me

so i've been trawling the web for like-minded people who think it was a mistake for the ateneo de manila to cancel final exams and not have anything useful in its stead. but all i could find was enthusiastic facebook chest-thumping from people who were "so proud to be an atenean!" and this one blog post comment:

err… di ko alam kung maiinggit ako o ano.

i'm not sure whether it's a testament to my poor googling skills, or proof that people just can't resist anything with an ateneo seal and a "person for others" label on it.

ateneo de manila calls off its final exams: noble or naive?


for those needing background, here's the optimistic, fuzzy-hearted letter from ateneo's philosophy department chair that's been making the facebook rounds lately, to unanimous and even fuzzier-hearted acclaim from ateneo alumni everywhere. and here's the original memo from VP cuyegkeng cancelling final exams this semester and encouraging the student body to do volunteer work instead.

now let me clearly state my contention: instead of calling off the exams altogether, why not offer volunteer work in place of them? hi kids, your "biology finals" will be held at the covered courts, where you will be packing relief goods for a minimum of three hours, or longer if you so choose. it won't be graded but your professor will be there, checking attendance. you won't have to study and you get to embrace your "infinite responsibility for the other." isn't that nice?

compared to this (or any other practicable solution), simply calling off exams and leaving the students to their own devices feels like a copout. the message seems to be: we won't expend our resources, we won't be responsible, you just go do what you like.

no, if the ateneo's true objective was to increase the number of bodies doing good work for typhoon victims, this clearly isn't the best way to go about it. so why then? these folks aren't dumb, there must be some other reason for this honesty-system approach.

taken at its word, the ateneo doesn't want its students simply helping others per se. what it wants is for its students to be free to decide, and to help others of their own accord. it doesn't want to volunteer its students; it wants its students to volunteer. it's on a point of principle that this whole thing turns; and it's by all means a gesture worthy of ateneo's grand jesuit tradition.

but is it worth it? and what does it offer in real-world terms?

a bag of groceries packed by a genuine volunteer will do just as much good as one packed by a conscript. with this unprecedented string of disasters before us, this dire need, is it socially responsible to free a student population of its usual responsibilities, and then simply allow whoever wishes to be idle do as they please?

don't embarrass yourself, ateneo. you didn't call off the UAAP finals games or the victory bonfire that followed for humanitarian reasons, and the need for volunteers then was every bit as urgent and even more immediate than it is now. calling off final exams and hoping for the best might be made to look good on a memo or an uplifting open letter, but the real world expects, and deserves, much, much better from you.

on american films for children:

Sendak: Europeans have done films about children, like The 400 Blows or My Life as a Dog, which is one of the most wonderful movies ever. It's tough to watch his suffering when his mother is dying and he scoots under the bed. That's the kind of way they have of dealing with children and they always have. We are squeamish. We are Disneyfied. We don't want children to suffer. But what do we do about the fact that they do? The trick is to turn that into art. Not scare children, that's never our intention.

Sendak:
I adored Mickey Mouse when I was a child. He was the emblem of happiness and funniness. You went to the movies then, you saw two movies and a short. When Mickey Mouse came on the screen and there was his big head, my sister said she had to hold onto me. I went berserk. I stood on the chair screaming, "My hero! My hero!" He had a lot of guts when he was young. We're both about the same age; we're about a month apart. He was the little brother I always wanted.

Spike Jonze: What was he like when he was young?

Sendak: He had teeth.

Jonze: Literally?

Sendak: He had literally teeth. I have toys in the other room.

Jonze: Was he more dangerous?

Sendak: Yes. He was more dangerous. He did things to Minnie that were not nice. I think what happened, was that he became so popular—this is my own theory—they gave his cruelty and his toughness to Donald Duck. And they made Mickey a fat nothing. He's too important for products. They want him to be placid and nice and adorable. He turned into a schmaltzer. I despised him after a point.

Newsweek: What do you say to parents who think the Wild Things film may be too scary?

Sendak: I would tell them to go to hell. That's a question I will not tolerate.

Newsweek: Because kids can handle it?

Sendak: If they can't handle it, go home. Or wet your pants. Do whatever you like. But it's not a question that can be answered.

on judy garland's "the wizard of oz":

Sendak: And she lays back in bed and says, "There's no place like home." And there were people who were very critical of that—sentimental—but for me it was pure irony. There is no place like home. Where the hell else is she gonna go? It's the opposite of sentimental—it's the hard truth. Grown-ups are afraid for children. It's not children who are afraid. That movie is unbelievably great.

paypal shuts down ondoy donations

i've heard my share of paypal horror stories but none have boiled my blood like this one about paypal freezing the paypal accounts of a couple of groups processing donations for ondoy victims.

and the really slimy thing is, paypal kept changing the reason for the suspension. first it was "requests for information", then after all the necessary documents were provided, they claimed to not process donations at all, in any country (NOT TRUE).

they only gave in and restored the accounts after their Global Communications Chief was subtly threatened with a PR shitstorm.


i say give 'em the shitstorm anyways!
