project munny: day one

Image
finally got started on that munny i promised to make for sputnik comics ages and ages ago. here are some of the materials i'll be using: first we give the munny a good wash: then we soften the vinyl (by heating it with a hairdryer) and cut out the ears with a hobby knife (got it cheap at saizen). reverse the ears, put them back in and stuff the resulting cavity with aluminum foil. hot-glue everything in place. trim off excess glue with knife. put some pre-kneaded sculpey over the hole and attempt to approximate a round head despite not really knowing what you're doing. i've started on the 'palong' here. i probably won't be able to find the appropriate googly eyes for this project, so, more sculpey. beak (looking more like a bill) and tongue. okay my fingers are raw from hours of rubbing sculpey by now, so let's work on the arms for a while. the munny came with a set of angel wings as accessories; i separated them using scissors and attached one to each arm

jp cuison, also known as one half of punnx comics, shows off his toy-customizing chops for jomike tejido's line of DIY designer toys, robotars : the above character, "bugi kulangot", was taken from the following video, also by mr. cuison: and further browsing of their youtube channel unearthed this gem of a 60's marvel cartoon parody, the capt. bgy. captain series. art look familiar? the pencils were done by manix abrera.

self-publishing guide by hazel manzano

Image
this a follow-up of sorts to yesterday's comics-making guide by gio paredes. callworks cartoonist hazel manzano shares her self-publishing guide here . and by self-publishing i don't mean photocopying or print-on-demand; hazel basically shows you how to set up your own publishing company. it's neither easy nor cheap, but there's no bigger dream for an independent-minded indie creator.

tony de zuniga on OFW diaries

tony de zuniga, komiks pioneer and creator of DC comics' jonah hex (recently adapted into a big budget hollywood flick ), was featured on this week's OFW diaries on GMA-7. WATCH mr. de zuniga explain the origins of jonah hex! CRINGE as kara david calls him a 'cartoonist' and jonah hex a 'superhero', and vaguely suggests that tony created batman and superman! THRILL at cameo appearances by sputnik comics, renaissance, jonas diego, harvey tolibao, gerry alanguilan and... gerry alanguilan! (just watch the video) thanks to randy valiente for posting this on his blog!

indie komiks overview on metakritiko

Image
in an article posted on thepoc.net, fidelis tan discusses the state of pinoy indie komiks, which, according to her, still has quite a ways to go: Despite the flourishing of comics in the Philippines, pundits invite both readers and makers to take a more critical standpoint. It’s true that more titles are coming out, and those who frequent comics conventions have more Pinoy superheroes, enkantos, slice of life and anime knock-offs to choose from. According to comics aficionados and critics Adam David and Carljoe Javier, it takes far more than a healthier show of comics produced to signal a true elevation of Philippine comics. tan points out three long-standing problems of local indie creators: aping western comics and manga, lack of techinical know-how, and "first-issue syndrome". now all of that is true, but also, i think, like saying that society's problems are poverty, crime and lack of education. look. there will always be copycats. there will always be slop

jose rizal, party animal

Image
BEFORE seated from left to right: Jose Rizal, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera, and Juan Luna. The man behind Luna is possibly their waiter. AFTER Pardo de Tavera is on the floor unconscious, the waiter has joined the group, and Rizal is about to hurl an apple on the hapless Trinidad. taken from ambeth ocampo's facebook page , which i heartily recommend. in it he says that these pictures will likely never be published, because the men do not appear "heroic" enough. i would argue quite the opposite. on a side note, these images also further demonstrate the power of the internet. even if you're a national hero and dead a hundred years, your drunken photos will still get posted on facebook.

indie komplex, an indie komiks forum

Image
one of my favorite things about komiks conventions is talking with fellow komiks creators. indie komplex is an experimental attempt to recreate that sense of community on the web, where it's accessible 24/7. it's new, it's empty, it's waiting for people who love pinoy independent comics to come together and start the conversation.

it's 2010. here's your jetpack.

Image
the martin jetpack is the first commercially available jetpack. get yours now for $86,000. from the FAQ: What happens if the engine stops? The Martin Jetpack is equipped with a 'Ballistic Parachute'. If something untoward happens the pilot pulls a toggle and a small propellant (similar to one used in a car airbag) is fired rapidly deploying a parachute. The pilot, Jetpack and parachute descend as one. Are we all going to be flying to work on these? Some people will use these for work; most of us will not be able to do this for some time. The main use for Jetpacks will initially be recreational. This is similar to current ATV, snowmobile, jet ski, and ultralight use. Are there any restrictions on who can fly one? Currently the pilot must weigh over 140 lbs and under 240 lbs. there. now whenever someone notices my weight, i'll just say i'm bulking up for my jetpack.

superman, from scratch

Image
You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called SUPERMAN. It is issue 1 of this book. You have been told that Superman is a man who dresses predominantly in a shade of blue, and wears a red S symbol. You know nothing else about the character. The cover must include a logo and the text THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE DARING EXPLOITS OF THE ONE AND ONLY SUPERMAN. And that's it. warren ellis posted the above challenge on his whitechapel forum several days ago, and here a few of the results: i am totally digging stonehenge superman. complete thread here . via

the teenager audio test

Image
Clicking the play button below will produce a tone that is generally only heard by people under the age of 25. It has been used as a deterrent device to keep teenagers from loitering in malls and shops, and sounds similar to a buzzing mosquito. The elderly and people with hearing damage often cannot hear the sound. i am over 25 but my ears don't feel like they are. still, i failed this 'test'. can any young 'uns reading this blog confirm whether clicking the button actually produces any sound? i feel like i've been had.
